Well boys and girls I finally did it. Half way on my journey to becoming a marathon runner.
On 26th August, I took part in the Fleetwood Half Marathon, along with a few hundred other runners. Most were more experienced than me, as was obvious by the kit, physique, fitness levels – and calf muscles. To say it was nerve-wracking would be an understatement.
My journey to there started with weight loss (as detailed here) the small matter of a 10km run earlier this year (the Great Manchester Run) and consistent training with my trainer Mike and care from my physio Nas.
Before I even made it to Fleetwood, I took part in the Manchester Pride Parade for the University of Manchester – I’ve volunteered as a steward before now and there’s always an awesome atmosphere and a great bunch of people around, but to walk the streets with friends and colleagues is really very special.
After a mad dash to Piccadilly (in the process missing our award for best Public Sector Float), to meet Mr GFB we headed off to Fleetwood.
We stayed in a little B&B on the seafront, just a 5 minute walk from the race start – perfectly placed as I avoided the usual queues at the loos on site which snaked down corridors – imagine the queues for the ladies on a Saturday night at any club in town, with everyone dressed in sports gear and you’ll get the picture.
We set off at 10am, with a good breeze, overcast skies and I tried not to get too worried as I was overtaken by the stream of more professional runners and those who set off too quickly (I passed them later on).
Despite it attempting to rain at one point and a struggle with the wind across the Promenade, I finished 380th out of 416 – which for a first half marathon, I will take with pride.
Now it’s onwards and upwards – Preston Guild Marathon on 28 October to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice.
Wish me luck.
